Why Specialized Supervisor Training Matters More Than We Think

And why “good enough” in supervision just… isn’t.
Stepping into supervision is one of the most meaningful transitions we make as clinicians. It’s a shift from doing the work to shaping the people who will go on to do the work — and that responsibility is sacred, powerful, and, honestly, a little intimidating.
When I first moved into a supervisory role, I knew I wanted to show up with intention, not assumption. I’d been well-trained as a therapist, but supervising is a different craft entirely. It requires a new lens, a new skill set, and a commitment to growth that mirrors what we ask from our supervisees.
That’s why I pursued the AAMFT Approved Supervisor training.
Not because it was required.
Not because it came with a fancy credential.
But because I wanted to be a supervisor who leads with competence, humility, equity, and—yes—grace.
Here’s what specialized supervisor training gave me:
A deeper ethical and systemic framework to guide tough decisions
Skills for balancing support with accountability (because kindness and clarity can coexist!)
Tools to navigate dual roles without burning out or burning bridges
The courage to lead with compassion, structure, and transparency
A community of supervisors who are also committed to growth and justice
In a field where our impact ripples outward through every clinician we supervise, “winging it” just isn’t enough. Our teams deserve skilled, grounded leadership. Our clients deserve supervisors who ensure evidence-based, equitable, culturally responsive care. And we deserve training that helps us thrive in this role, not simply survive it.
Here’s to leading with courage.
Here’s to supervising with intention.
And here’s to doing it all with grace.
